  6.     One of modern medicine's disheartening setbacks has been the
  7. emergence of TB strains that are resistant to standard
  8. medication. In last week's Nature, researchers from Hammersmith
  9. Hospital in London and from the Pasteur Institute in Paris
  10. report they have uncovered the genetic reason behind this
  11. dangerous trend. They have discovered that common forms of the
  12. TB bacterium bear a gene that makes it susceptible to the
  13. antibiotic isoniazid -- a gene that is missing in drug-resistant
  14. strains. The finding could lead to improved diagnostic tests
  15. that will help doctors treat people with drug-resistant TB
  16. before they can pass the infection on to others.
